1/3 - woven together: a summer workshop series by ebere a.

My project, woven together: a summer workshop series by ebere a., is a free basket weaving workshop event celebrating the collective memory of hands and craft practices that Igbo-Nigerian women have and continue to steward. After hosting free workshops for the last three years in Chicago and beyond, this offering naturally evolved into this inaugural ‘woven together’ series to take place this summer 2025 at a venue on the South Side of Chicago. I wanted to share this collective space with makers, creative minds, and folks that are interested in crafting together. In addition, I find it key to offer this as a free public workshop to my community since craft practice is often monetized thus becoming more inaccessible to artist, makers, and creatives like myself.

2/3 - “ebere agwuncha’s cenobitic praise songs” by Camille Bacon ->

“A feature of the artist ebere agwuncha who explores the regenerative, spiritual, and communal dimensions of material culture.” take a read of this wonderful essay written by a dear one, camille bacon via Sixty Inches From Center.

“... agwuncha’s artworks are cenobitic praise songs whose rhythm revolves around the Igbo principle of “eliminat[ing] the product and retain[ing] the process so that every occasion and every generation will receive its own impulse and experience of creation.”1 To this end, the sculpture (“the product”) is not satisfied with sitting inert and untouched. Like any alive thing, it calls out for touch, it yearns to be emptied and renewed. Like any reincarnation of history, it tugs on velvet rope to ring the bell of generational rememory. As such, the artist invited all who visited the exhibition to partake in a ritual (“the process”) in which they poured water from the owoko into glasses and offered it to the mound of loam upon which the sculpture was placed. Here, a means of coaxing whispers out from the earth’s core.”

3/3 - Writing Space's Writer-in-Residence Program

i am excited to join the Writing Space's Writer-in-Residence Program this summer of 2025, facilitated by Maggie Taft, PhD. through this 10-week program i will be writing and researching to produce a performative-lecture in response to select igbo archives. i will be updating my are.na board periodically, sharing linked loops with this work in development.
